The Standard Assessment Procedure is the UK’s recommended methodology for measuring the thermal efficiency of residential buildings. It calculates the typical energy usage for space and water heating. The CO2 emissions are calculated as part of the process.
When are SAP calculations required?
Extensions, Conversions and New Build
SAP calculations are increasingly required especially if there is a high level of glazing (over 25 % of floor area) in the extension to show that when it is completed the dwelling complies with Current Building Regulations.
The calculation is normally done on the whole house calculation where the existing house plus the proposed extension must be lower than the existing house.
SAP calculations must be done before work commences and the Building Control Officer gives approval. With a new build SAP methodology calculates the thermal efficiency of your proposed property and is calculated from the plans and specification at design stage before work commences and again within 5 days of the completion stage when the calculations are submitted to the Building Control Officer to be signed off.
